SPS09: Exploring the SAP HANA Platform

Written by Saiprashanth Reddy Venumbaka, Director, Solution Architecture, Product Marketing at SAP

With SPS09, SAP HANA Platform adds several capabilities such as multitenant databases containers, dynamic tiering, streaming, smart data integration, smart data quality, Hadoop Integration with virtual user defined functions (vUDF) and graph.

To explain what SAP HANA Platform includes now, we divided its capabilities into 3 groups.

Database Services – Foundation:

The breakthrough innovations in SAP HANA Platform are grouped into database services foundation features.

At its core, SAP HANA Platform is an ACID compliant, in-memory columnar store that can process transactions and analytics on a single copy of data. Columnar store eliminates the need for indexes and materialized views, enabling ad hoc query processing that deliver insights on fresh data. SAP HANA Platform is designed to leverage multi-core processing capabilities of today’s processors. SAP HANA Platform’s advanced compression techniques can significantly compress data so that more data can be kept and processed in the memory and processor caches, delivering unparalleled speed. You can read more about other database services foundation features such as multitenant database containers and dynamic tiering in my previous blogs.

Database Services – Processing Capabilities:

In addition to the core database foundation features, SAP HANA Platform also includes processing capabilities that enable advanced analytics on diverse types of data.

The ability to process multiple data types – structured, unstructured, text, spatial and series data – in one system enables you to build next generation applications. Advanced processing capabilities such as predictive (60+ algorithms), data quality, and graph provide deeper insights. Built in business function libraries help to push down more logic inside the database accelerating application performance and reducing data movements.

Application Services:

SAP HANA Platform includes application services to build web-based applications and supports open development standards, such as SQL, HTML5, Java Script, JDBC, ODBC, JSON and OData.

Here is a quick summary of the application services included in SAP HANA Platform. The web server supports server side JavaScript and OData. The Fiori UX libraries allow developers to build beautiful HTML5 user interfaces that are not only accessible from any device but also automatically adapted to the device on which they are accessed. The Application Lifecycle Management tool helps to perform version control, bundle, transport and install applications.

Integration Services:

Organizations generate and store data in multiple systems. To deliver a complete picture of an enterprise, SAP HANA platform includes integration services to handle various integration strategies from a variety of data sources.

Smart Data Access allows you to access data across data silos while keeping the data in place. Smart Data Integration replicates and moves any type of data into SAP HANA platform in real-time either it resides in the cloud or on-premise. SAP HANA Platform also includes an adapter framework to build custom adapters to either move data from an additional source or federate queries to any source. The built-in streaming processor can capture and analyze live data streams on the fly and route incoming data to the appropriate storage or dashboards. SAP HANA Platform provides several integrations to Hadoop. Data in Hadoop can be accessed thru Spark and HIVE. Additionally, with native virtual User Defined Functions (vUDF), SAP HANA Platform can directly access HDFS files and Map Reduce functions as if they were local tables.

To summarize, here is the complete picture with all the capabilities included in SAP HANA platform SP09:
